The CW picks up 90210 and One Tree Hill keeps Monday

With all the “Beverly Hills, 90210″ casting lately, it’s not a surprise that The CW has picked up the proposed spinoff.

A day before The CW’s upfront presentation, The Hollywood Reporter reports that the series, which centers on three generations of a family that just moved to the famous zip code, will join the network for the fall.

Over the past weekend, it was announced that original cast member Jennie Garth will reprise her role as Kelly Taylor, who has grown up and become a guidance counselor at her alma mater, West Beverly High.

It’s expected that the spinoff will get programmed for The CW’s Tuesday, with a possible pairing with “How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls,” which is in the running for an order as well. The show centers on the adventures of a young, Yale-educated woman (Joanna Garcia) who is hired to tutor two Palm Beach heiresses, played by the newly cast Lucy Hale (“Bionic Woman”) and Ashley Newbrough. Michael Cassidy will play the woman’s boyfriend.

The CW also picked up the reality show “Stylista” as a companion piece to Tyra Banks/Ken Mok’s “America’s Next Top Model” on Wednesdays. From the same producers, “Stylista” is a “Devil Wears Prada”-esque competition show that allows 11 ambitious assistants to taste what it’s like to have heavy responsibilities at Elle magazine by helping its fashion news director Anne Slowey.

The winner will get the editorial position at Elle, a paid lease on a Manhattan apartment and a clothing allowance at H&M for a year.

Of the shows that have been on the bubble, “Reaper’s” fate continues to be up in the air, although The CW did renew “The Game” for 22 episodes but canceled the critically acclaimed “Aliens in America.”

With Tuesdays and Wednesdays revitalized, it’s expected that The CW will keep its Mondays – “Gossip Girl” and “One Tree Hill” – and Thursdays – “Smallville” and “Supernatural” – the same. Fridays may include repeats or the comedy block, which includes “Everybody Hates Chris.”

It was recently announced that Media Rights Capital (MRC) will take over the primetime programming block for Sundays, producing two comedies and two dramas.

The CW announces schedule

The CW got into the scheduling mood today, announcing its 2008-2009 schedule in New York City, and it’s sticking with what works for it. That means spoiled rich teens, spoiled aspiring models, and a sci-fi Thursday.

Word broke yesterday that the network was picking up three new shows, but no one knew where they would fit into the schedule until today.

Monday nights will leave the hallways in schools buzzing the next morning, as Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill take over the first day of the work week.

Tuesday nights continue the chatter, with a pair of new teen-targeting soapy dramas, including the much-hyped Beverly Hills, 90210 redux, simply dubbed 90210. That will be followed by Surviving the Filthy Rich, which sees a young woman live the glamorous life of a live-in tutor to a pair of super-wealthy teenage girls.

Wednesday is makeover day, with a pair of Tyra Banks reality shows. America’s Next Top Model will blur into Stylista, a new show that sees contestants competing for an editorial job at Elle.

Thursdays stay the same, with the power-packed combination of Smallville and Supernatural. The eighth season of Smallville, which will be without much of its original cast and creators, is looking like the show’s last.

The weekend will begin with laughs, as Everybody Hates Chris and The Game kick things off before an encore presentation of America’s Next Top Model on Friday.

Sundays get a little tricky, with the CW selling airspace to Media Rights Capital, which will effectively have the keys to the company and develop shows for that evening.

Finally, Reaper can keep their socks on their feet. The bubble show, which recently has had a seesaw ride of emotion, will be back for a second season. The CW has ordered 13 episodes of the supernatural comedy and will air them a little later – season two debuts midseason.

“No one’s going to see that coming”

Few people have had a life like “One Tree Hill” character Nathan Scott’s. He was raised by an overbearing murderer and a prescription pill-popper, has had two near-death experiences, had his NBA dreams crushed in a bar fight, and is facing the pressures of being a husband and dad at just 22. And yet, James Lafferty, who plays Nate, says he’s more like Nate than any other character on the show.

“I don’t identify completely with any of the characters,” James, 22, tells SOAPnet.com. “I share Nathan’s competitive nature – obviously, I don’t have the same problems at home – but I identify with a lot of his traits.”

Speaking of those problems at home, James says he thinks they’re portrayed accurately. Responding to SOAPnet.com reader concerns that Nathan’s mom, Deb, is getting an unfair pass over dad Dan, he explains, “Dan has to deal with the consequences of his actions. Yes, Deb tried to kill Dan, but she had her reasons. Obviously, no one should kill anyone, but she was driven to it much more than Dan was driven to kill his brother, Keith. And Keith was such a beloved character.”

Plus, Nathan and Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) need Deb’s help! The show’s young married couple have a 5-year-old, not to mention promising careers in music and basketball to pursue. James says he enjoys taking on the role of a young father and husband: “It’s challenging, but it’s good. I actually am the age of the character I’m playing, and it’s pretty interesting putting myself into those shoes. Obviously, a younger father is going to make a few mistakes here and there.”

Dealing with the Drama
It helps that James works well with costar Jackson Brundage, who plays the kid in question. “He’s pretty much a genius,” James says. “He’s a great energy on set.” And, he explains, that’s needed when the actors get drawn into the show’s often difficult dramas. “Each character has to go to a dark place to come back out of it,” which means everyone pitches in to “lighten it up a bit” when the cameras aren’t rolling..

Still, James doesn’t think Nathan’s had it that bad, when you put it in perspective. “I think one season Peyton (Hilarie Burton) cried for 13 episodes,” he jokes.

As for the final episodes of the season, the actor tells us, “There’s a lot more story to be told with Nathan and Dan – Dan drops a bomb on everyone. And what’s going on with Lucas’s (Chad Michael Murray) storyline – I almost guarantee that no one’s going to see that coming.”

We can’t wait!

James Lafferty and Sophia Bush: couple going strong?

Sophia Bush and rumored boyfriend James Lafferty, both co-stars on One Tree Hill, arrive together at LAX airport in Los Angeles on Monday.

The couple patiently waited for their luggage and for Sophia’s one-eyed pit bull, Patch, to arrive so she could load him into her car.

Late last month, Sophia (25), and James (22), were supposedly looking cozy in a corner at NYC’s Meatpacking hotspot 1Oak with her hand on his thigh.

Could this be another One Tree Hill real-life romance? (Sophia and co-star Chad Michael Murray were once upon a time married.)

Basket ball game attracts 1,300 One Tree Hill fans

The fifth annual James Lafferty One Tree Hill Charity Basketball Game was part real athletic event, part Hollywood. A DJ played music while actors dribbled down the court. Free throws were shot shirtless. And the second half was almost delayed because Jackson Brundage, the 6-year-old actor who plays Jamie on the filmed-in-Wilmington series, was so caught up dancing on the court, Lafferty had to pick him up and plop him down on the sidelines.

Each year, Lafferty, who plays basketball mentor Nathan Scott on The CW drama, hosts the game in Wilmington to thank his fans for their support and to raise money for various charities.

This year, the money raised at the event went to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Wilmington Family YMCA and Winnie’s Garden.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for fans of the show to meet the cast and I think it’s for a great cause,” said Chloe Glenn, a 21-year-old fan from New Jersey.

She and her friend, Michelle DuBois, 24, from Atlanta, have attended the games for the past two years. Other fans came from as far away as Canada, Ohio and Florida. The winners of a recent Macy’s Weekend in Wilmington contest attended, too. After the game, they were on their way to a party with the cast and a private concert by musician and fifth season guest star Kate Voegele.

The night before the game, DuBois and Glenn got their own special encounter. While walking around downtown Wilmington, they ran into Joe Manganiello, who plays Owen the bartender this season. To their surprise, he stopped and talked with them.

“They’re just good people, down to earth,” DuBois said of the cast.

DuBois and Glenn were among the 1,300 fans who paid $25 a ticket to see the cast and crew. Tickets, which went on sale more than a month ago, sold out in less than 10 minutes. Saturday’s game began at 11 a.m., but many fans showed up hours in advance and many stayed late into the afternoon.

The game, a face-off between the “old” and “new” lineups of Tree Hill Ravens (the series’ fictional high-school team), started out tough for Lafferty’s home team. The actor, who won his high school’s MVP award in basketball, wore his character’s old black jersey.

Helping him out were co-stars Antwon Tanner (who plays Skills), Stephen Colletti (Chase), Vaughn Wilson (Fergie) and others.

The newbies, who included Manganiello and wore white jerseys, racked up points early on. Laffety’s team fought back to end the first half 40-37.

But the momentum did not last. The gamed ended with the new cast members pulling off 89 points to the old school-ers’ 83.

It probably did not help that Brundage, Sophia Bush (Brooke), Lee Norris (Mouth) and the show’s creator, Mark Schwahn, had microphones on the sidelines and were giving the players a hard time.

“The new Ravens have the lead, but the old Ravens have more screen time,” Schwahn announced at one point to the crowd. “But I think if the new Ravens continue to have the lead, they’ll have even less screen time.”

It’s likely most fans will not remember the details of the game, however. After the two 20-minute halves, most of the 1,300 fans queued up to wait (and wait) to seek autographs from cast members armed with uncapped Sharpies. The cast signed everything from DVDs and inflatable pink flamingoes to posters and the shirts on fans’ backs.

Meanwhile, crew members stood in the center of the court and auctioned off items from the set. The first item, a photo with the cast in attendance, went for $1,000 cash.

Scores of happy teenage girls walked out of Cape Fear Community College’s Shwartz Center giggling and firmly clutching their autographs.

“I expected chaos,” said 17-year-old fan Elizabeth Reese from Virginia. This was her first game. “I watched all season, religiously.”
